Finding Hair Porosity

To find your hair porosity, there are various ways you can figure it out.

Low porosity hair has a very intact and tight cuticle, repels moisture and product, and has a hard time absorbing it. On the same token, it takes a long time for moisture to leave your hair as well. Most virgin hair is low porosity, especially people with coarse hair strands.

High porosity hair has a raised cuticle which quickly absorbs moisture and products, and also dries out easily. This hair type needs lots of care, and likely a good combination of protein and deep moisture treatments.

Medium porosity is, as it seems, right in the middle of these two. Most people have medium porosity hair. If you are choosing products and feel your hair is medium, go for the Low to Medium option if your hair is virgin, and go for the High option if your hair is very thin or treated.

People may have low, medium, or high porosity hair naturally. Your strands may also have different porosity levels, such as low or medium porosity at your scalp (where it has not been treated or damaged), but having high porosity hair at your ends due to damage over time. Choose our Scalp Massage Oil type based off of your natural or scalp level porosity.

Colored, treated, frequently heat styled, or damaged hair will most likely be high porosity as its cuticle has been degraded.

To test your porosity, please check each of these steps-

1 Take a spray bottle of water or product. Take a nice thick clump of hair in your hands, and spray the water on it. If water begins dripping off without much absorption, you have low porosity hair. If the water is absorbed very quickly, you have high porosity hair. If it is somewhere in the middle, you have medium porosity hair.

2. If your hair dries extremely quickly, or drinks up moisture and oil very quickly, it is high porosity. If it takes awhile to dry, it is lower porosity.
3 To confirm your porosity, run your finger gently up and down a strand. If it feels smooth and sleek, it is low porosity. If it feels rougher or bumpy, it is high porosity.
4 Low porosity hair will most likely be naturally somewhat to very shiny. High porosity hair in its natural state will not have much shine.
